Look back in year of 1923, a Swiss locomotive and machine works(SLM) have developed and delivered the world’s first heavy duty turbocharger for diesel engine, with external plain bearings and two stages compressor at ratio of 1.35.

VTC 254 type of turbochargers was introduced in market by ABB in 1980s, then it quickly becoming the standard choice for Caterpillar's then for new 3600 diesel and gas engines. This type of locomotive T/C was also in large demand in the Indian railway.  Then VIC304 was successfully tested on an AlCO 16 cylinders 251 engine. Then, VTC series has widely been applied in worldwide for diesel locomotives such as more than 3000 VTC 254 are runned in Chinese railway. VTC has dominated the locomotive T/C market for more 30 years. Then it has transformed into TPR.

TPR is designed by Robert Doetl for Indian railways initially at 2002 in order to meet modern medium-speed engines for heavy-duty locomotives. TPR is a new railroad turbocharger by ABB, it is developed based on TPL design, it features at variable turbine geometry option, high-efficiency high-pressure ratio, but also have high reliability and longer overhaul intervals (TBO) and environmental compatibility.

There are two TPR types including TPR56 and TPR61, which have 3500 sets in service worldwide, they highly met application of various types of heavy duty locomotives and shunting locomotives under various harsh load distribution and environmental conditions. In which, TPR56 fits for engine types of HXN3B and HXN5B locomotives, are now hauling Sino-Europe international freight train.
