Exploring the Road to Zero Carbon, ABB at the 2nd World Congress of Internal Combustion Engines

On April 21, 2021, the 2nd World Internal Combustion Engine Conference opened in Jinan, Shandong Province, with the theme of "Green, Efficient, Intelligent and Reliable", focusing on the goal of "Carbon Summit and Carbon Neutral" to discuss the future development of the internal combustion engine industry. As the main power of land transportation, ship transportation, construction machinery and other fields, internal combustion engine is one of the most promising and effective products to achieve energy saving and emission reduction. Focusing on the theme of this year's conference, ABB Turbocharged presented a number of innovative products and digital solutions at the exhibition, and discussed with colleagues from all walks of life how to move towards net-zero carbon shipping, helping the internal combustion engine industry to meet the challenge of creating a cleaner, lower carbon, more efficient and more reliable green and sustainable future.

In the same period of the exhibition, ABB Turbocharger held the new A200-H launch, the new highlights of the new product, much attention. The new A200-H single-stage high-pressure ratio turbocharger fills the gap between the current A100-H single-stage turbocharger and ABB Power2, which brings an economical and green solution for advanced rarefied high-speed gas engines, bringing a new application choice for engine manufacturers.

The A200-H series turbocharger adopts a new design of high-efficiency compressor and turbine, the product breaks through the pressure ratio limit, reaching 6.5, compared to the A100-H can improve the efficiency of the supercharger by 3-4%, significantly improve the engine adaptability to the environment (altitude and temperature), to achieve high-altitude operating conditions engine operation without power loss, thus allowing a higher level of energy utilization. In terms of additional cost reduction and efficiency, the A200-H series turbocharger uses digital rotor life cycle assessment and determines rotor replacement intervals based on the actual operating conditions of the supercharger rather than standard operating curves, providing customers with accurate rotor replacement recommendations and reducing operating and maintenance costs.

The A200-H series of four different turbocharger models (A231-H, A234-H, A238-H, A240-H) will meet a variety of customer needs.

Exploring net-zero carbon fuels and contributing to emission reduction wisdom in the marine sector

International shipping accounts for approximately 2% of global CO2 emissions, and as a result, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a long-term goal of reducing greenhouse gases from shipping by 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. In this process, the maritime industry urgently needs to find new ship engine fuel solutions.

Christoph Rofka, Senior Vice President of ABB Switzerland AG & Head of ABB Turbocharged Low and Medium Speed Engine and Locomotive Applications Product Group, said in his presentation "Towards Zero Carbon Shipping" at the 6th International Technical Exchange Symposium on High Power Engines on the afternoon of April 23 that for large ocean-going vessels The internal combustion engine as the main ship power will remain irreplaceable for a long time in the future. To achieve IMO's ambition to reduce emissions, net-zero carbon fuels, i.e. hydrogen-based fuels for various ship engines, are needed. Currently, the use of natural gas combined with carbon capture to produce blue hydrogen is a more feasible approach when comparing the investment cost and the conversion efficiency of various hydrogen-based energy sources.
